The decision to roll Viridiana in Spain caused that Buñuel, exiled in Mexico after the aim of the Spanish Civil War, hard was criticized by the Spanish republicans in exile. The film was representing of Spain in the Festival of Cannes, where it obtained the Gold Palm, maximum award of the festival, and the unanimous ovation of public and jury. Nevertheless, a published very hostile article in the official newspaper of the Vatican, L'Observatore Romano, caused its immediate prohibition in Spain. The incident vindicated the figure of Buñuel before his critical and turned to Viridiana more of the prohibited films of this controversial film director. The tape deals with the Viridiana beginner, on the verge of taking the habits, must leave the convent to visit his uncle Don Jaime, that has paid the studies to her. During his visit, Don Jaime tries to retain her. When not obtaining it, the man commits suicide, causing who Viridiana resigns to be nun and it remains in the mansion to practice the Christian charity. The arrival of Jorge, natural son of Don Jaime, will definitively change the destiny of the young person. The pro-Franco censorship objected the original end of the tape, in which Viridiana called to the door of her cousin, he opened and entered, closing the door behind her. Obedient, Buñuel proposed a different end that it finished being more pernicious than first and that, ironically, was accepted by the censors without repairs. |
